Chapter 5 · 5.7
Pivot Tables
With a pivot table, you can summarise a large list without writing formulas. For example: how much revenue does each package generate? You simply drag the fields to the right place yourself.
Creating a pivot table
- Click inside your list. The list must have headings and must not contain any empty rows.
- On the Insert tab, click Pivot Table.
- Check the range and choose whether the pivot table should go on a New sheet or an existing sheet. Click OK.

Choosing fields
On the right, under Select fields, you'll see all the headings from your list. Tick the fields you want to use. Text is automatically placed under Rows, numbers under Values. Drag fields between Filters, Columns, Rows and Values to rearrange the table.

- Under Values, click the field to choose between Sum, Number, Midpoint, Max or Minus / Min.
- On the PivotTable tab, you can choose the layout and a style, and turn totals on or off.
- Pivot tables don't recalculate automatically. Have you changed the list? Then click Refresh on the PivotTable tab.
Tip: use Slicer on the Insert tab to get buttons that let you quickly filter the pivot table, for example by location.
